June 2025 in Togo: Demonstrations repressed, disturbing disappearances and deaths under the orders of the Gnassingbé regime

The peaceful demonstrations that shook Togo in June 2025 left behind a heavy human toll and a wave of national and international indignation. While thousands of citizens took to the streets to demand a return to the 1992 Constitution, the release of political prisoners and an end to the current regime, the government's response was unprecedentedly brutal.

Several young people were shot dead, others seriously injured, and many demonstrators were arrested or disappeared. Entire families are still without news of their loved ones, abducted or arrested without legal procedure, in a climate of terror orchestrated by the security forces acting under the direct orders of Faure Gnassingbé's government.

Among the victims, the names Anselme, Douti, Jojo, Moufidou, Mohamed, Abdoulaye Yakoubou... all young lives cut short, some of which have not even been given a dignified burial. Others are still missing, but no serious investigation has been launched.

The June 6 Movement (M66), which emerged in the wake of these protests, denounces systematic repression aimed at stifling any dissident voice. It calls on the international community to break its silence in the face of this human tragedy and demand truth, justice and reparations.

Enough is enough. Togo cannot continue to be ruled by fear, impunity and contempt for human life. The blood shed in June 2025 must not be forgotten. The fight for freedom goes on.
